The Body Wash That Actually Nourishes: Why the Mermaid Soul Formula Is Different

"Most body washes leave your skin needing something. This one leaves your skin having received something."
The average body wash contains sodium lauryl sulfate as its primary cleansing agent, water as its main ingredient, synthetic fragrance for scent, and a handful of marketing ingredients listed near the bottom of the label in quantities too small to do much. It cleans your body adequately. It also strips your skin of its natural oils, disrupts your microbiome, and leaves your skin in a state of mild deficit that your moisturizer then has to compensate for.
We set out to build something fundamentally different. Here's what we built instead.
Gentler Cleansing Agents
The Mermaid Soul Body Wash uses Sodium C14-16 Olefin Sulfonate as its primary surfactant — a milder, more skin-compatible cleanser than the sulfates found in most drugstore washes. It creates a rich, satisfying lather without the aggressive stripping that SLS and SLES produce. Cocamidopropyl Betaine, derived from coconut, is added as a secondary surfactant that reduces irritation and adds creamy texture. Coco-Glucoside, a gentle non-ionic surfactant from coconut and fruit, adds additional mildness and a natural, biodegradable origin story.
The result is a lather that cleans effectively while maintaining the skin's pH balance and leaving the moisture barrier measurably more intact than conventional sulfate-based washes.
Dual Aloe: More Than Just Aloe Vera
Most products that use aloe use aloe barbadensis leaf juice — the standard extracted gel. We use that too. But the Mermaid Soul Body Wash also uses Aloe Barbadensis Flower Extract — a different part of the same plant with a different and complementary phytochemical profile. Aloe flowers contain polyphenol antioxidants and compounds not found in the leaf gel, providing an additional layer of anti-inflammatory and soothing activity.
Together, the dual aloe system delivers broader-spectrum benefits than leaf juice alone. It's the kind of detail that costs more and doesn't make for a simpler ingredient list, but it produces a meaningfully better product.
Corallina Officinalis: The Rare Marine Algae
This is the ingredient we're most proud of, and the one that distinguishes the Body Wash most clearly from anything else in its category. Corallina Officinalis is a species of coralline red algae that grows in the intertidal zone — the harsh band of coastal rock that is alternately submerged and exposed by the tides. To survive this environment, it develops remarkable protective compounds: antioxidants, minerals (calcium and magnesium from its calcified structure), and enzymes that protect it from UV damage and desiccation.
For skin, these same compounds deliver antioxidant protection, mineral nourishment, and a gentle enzymatic exfoliating effect. It's an extraordinarily rare ingredient in body wash formulation, and one of the primary reasons the Mermaid Soul Body Wash is in a genuinely different category.
The Botanical Matrix
The lower half of the ingredient list reads like a high-end facial serum. Curcuma Longa (Turmeric) Root Extract provides curcumin — a potent anti-inflammatory and skin brightening compound backed by extensive research. Hamamelis Virginiana (Witch Hazel) provides natural astringent and anti-inflammatory properties. Coccinia Indica Fruit Extract brightens and evens skin tone. Solanum Melongena (Eggplant) Fruit Extract contains nasunin, a powerful anthocyanin antioxidant.
Two forms of basil — Ocimum Basilicum and Ocimum Sanctum (Holy Basil) — complete the botanical profile with antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. Mango Seed Butter, Argan Oil, and Shea Butter provide rich lipid nourishment that keeps the skin from feeling stripped even as the surfactants do their cleansing work.
Most body washes leave your skin needing something. The Mermaid Soul Body Wash leaves your skin having received something.
