Inside the Formula: The Science Behind the Mermaid Soul Body Oil

"Not a drop of water to dilute it, not a single filler ingredient. Just oil, carefully chosen and thoughtfully assembled."
When we formulated the Mermaid Soul Body Oil, we had one guiding question: what does depleted, sun-exposed skin actually need at a molecular level — and what combination of ingredients can best deliver it? The answer took the form of seven carefully chosen oils, two forms of coconut, and a sea kelp extract that has been used in European skincare science for decades. Here's a complete, transparent look at what's in the bottle and why every single ingredient earns its place.
Sunflower Seed Oil — The Base
Sunflower seed oil forms the carrier base of the formula. It's lightweight, non-comedogenic, and rich in linoleic acid — a type of omega-6 fatty acid that is essential for maintaining the skin barrier. Research has shown that skin with higher linoleic acid content has lower transepidermal water loss (TEWL), meaning it holds moisture more effectively. Sunflower oil also contains significant amounts of Vitamin E, a natural antioxidant that protects skin cells from oxidative stress.
Borage Seed Oil — The Barrier Rebuilder
Borage oil is the richest known plant source of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), containing approximately 20-26% GLA by weight. GLA is an omega-6 fatty acid that plays a critical role in skin barrier function and has demonstrated anti-inflammatory properties in multiple clinical studies. Skin that is depleted by UV exposure, harsh products, or environmental stress often has a measurably compromised GLA profile. Borage oil directly addresses this deficit.
Evening Primrose, Rosehip, and Linseed Oils
Evening primrose oil is a GLA-rich companion to borage oil, adding additional barrier-repairing fatty acids. It has been studied extensively for inflammatory skin conditions and has demonstrated ability to improve skin moisture, elasticity, and fatigue resistance.
Rosehip seed oil contains naturally occurring trans-retinoic acid — a natural retinoid that promotes skin cell turnover and collagen synthesis. It's also rich in lycopene and beta-carotene, powerful antioxidant carotenoids, and has been shown in clinical studies to reduce hyperpigmentation and improve skin texture over time.
Linseed oil is one of the plant kingdom's richest sources of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), an omega-3 fatty acid that reduces inflammation and supports cell membrane integrity in post-sun skin.
Jojoba, Sea Kelp, and Mango Seed Butter
Jojoba is technically a wax ester rather than an oil — and this distinction matters. Wax esters are the primary structural component of human sebum, making jojoba uniquely biologically compatible with human skin. It provides lightweight hydration and has a gentle regulatory effect on the skin's oil production.
Laminaria Digitata (Sea Kelp) Extract is the marine heart of this formula. Rich in fucoidan, minerals including iodine and magnesium, and the kelp's own UV-protective compounds evolved over millennia of tidal exposure, it brings a dimension of skin restoration that plant oils alone cannot provide.
Mango Seed Butter adds a luxurious body to the formula while delivering stearic acid, oleic acid, and linoleic acid. It gives the formula its distinctive silky skin-feel.
What This Formula Is Not
This formula contains not a drop of water to dilute it, not a single filler ingredient to bulk it up. Just oil, carefully chosen and thoughtfully assembled. The result is a Body Oil that absorbs quickly, leaves no greasy residue, and delivers genuine transformation with consistent use.
This is what's in the bottle. Transparent, purposeful, and backed by both ancient wisdom and modern science.
