Every summer, no matter what, we went to the beach.
Hawaii. Mexico. South Carolina. Florida.
If there was salt in the air, we were there.
My mom did her best to protect us. Thick layers of old-school Coppertone before we ran straight back into the sun. But sunscreen in the 80s didn’t stand a chance against hours in the ocean. I always came home pink. Sometimes red.
And that’s when the ritual began.
She’d walk over to her aloe plants, snap off a thick green leaf, trim the edges (sometimes carefully, sometimes not), and split it open right there in the kitchen. The gel was cool. Fresh. A little sticky. And it worked.
No chemicals. No mystery ingredients. Just a plant and a mom trying to make her kid feel better.
